About IQ Scores
Intelligence test scores typically follow a normal distribution, resembling a bell-shaped curve. In the case of the Wechsler IQ tests, the majority of scores (about 68%) cluster around the average score of 100, with a range of plus or minus 15 points. This means that approximately 68% of test takers will achieve scores between 85 and 115, representing a typical range of performance. As we move towards the extremes of the distribution, scores become less common. Traditionally, a score below 70 has been considered indicative of a low IQ, while a score above 140 is associated with a high IQ. However, it is important to note that IQ scores alone are not sufficient to diagnose an intellectual disability. Diagnostic criteria also consider factors such as the age of onset and adaptive skills to make a comprehensive assessment.
